Originally published 1882–98, this monumental ten-part work by Harvard scholar Francis James Child (1825–96) contains the text and variants of 305 ballads, with detailed commentary and critical apparatus. Volume 4, Part 1 (1890) contains ballads 189-225, including 'Katharine Jaffray' and 'Rob Roy'.
